 Excerpt:
"You're awake?" He sounded more than a little surprised.
"I'm not really sure the state I'm in qualifies as awake."
"Here I was, terrified to poke the dragon, and you're already drinking coffee and talking in complete sentences."
I snorted and took a sip of the aforementioned liquid gold. "Are you always like this in the morning?"
"If you'd let me sleep over you'd already know the answer to that question. Why aren't you asleep?"
In general or just tonight, I silently wondered. "Bad dream. I've been tossing and turning all night. I finally gave in and got out of bed."
Papers rustled in the background and when he spoke again, his voice was lower, intimate."You want to talk about it?"
"Something tells me my nightmares are the least of our problems."
"You have no idea. I need you to come down to my office."
I sighed. "Can it at least wait until after sunrise?"
"Would I be breaking the no phone calls before noon policy if it could wait?"
“There really is no rest for the wicked, is there?”
He laughed and the sound warmed me more than a hundred cups of coffee. "Apparently not, in your case. Now, there's a dirty chai latte and a croissant for you if you're here before Amalie. I can't promise real coffee and pastries will survive beyond five minutes of her arrival."
"It's four-thirty in the morning, Mas. If you know what's good for you, you'll make sure at least  one dirty chai and croissant remain unmolested."
"I'll see you soon." He was laughing as he hung up the phone.
Three hours ago I’d practically crawled through the doorway, exhausted from cleaning up after a newbie vamp who’d broken the Jus Sanguinis Intergentes when she killed her donor. The blood pact between people and vampires had a clear no killing, no exceptions clause.
It was up to the maker to ensure their child was ready to feed unsupervised. If something went wrong and the Council found out about it, we cleaned up the mess and the sire was subject to heavy fines and possible revocation of their rights to expand their blood lines. She’d been quite literally a bitch to track and take down.
It had been a long night and it was shaping up to be an even longer day.
I wasted little time getting dressed, opting for a slip on black jersey dress, eighteen hole Docs and a leather jacket. Jewelry was a hindrance in my line of work. My meeting with Mason could easily turn into a run. Choked with my own chain? No, thank you. Unclasping the necklace, I set it in a glass dish on my bathroom counter. I ran a brush through my hair, a toothbrush over my teeth and slipped into the between. I stepped out of the alley two buildings down from the station and walked the last block and a half.
Amalie was swarmed by detectives trying to get at the goodies she brought over from the Daily Grind. She greeted me with a warm smile, shaking her head when I offered to pull her out of the fray. She had managed to endear herself to the entire department in record time. All it took was real coffee and fresh pastries. I pointed to Mason's office. She'd make her way over once the starving masses had their fill.
Mason was so engrossed in the file on his desk he didn't hear me come in. He looked as tired as I felt - too many double shifts. Despite an uptick in activity, SPTF was short staffed due to budget cuts. Without enough man power to staff the shifts properly overtime was mandatory.
"Is that for me?" I pointed at the to-go cup and white paper bag on his desk.
He finally looked up and gave me a smile which lit up his whole face. "As promised."
I stole a quick kiss, grabbed the coffee and croissant, and settled in the chair across from him. I took a long sip of my latte, savoring the delicious mix of tea and espresso. "Man, I needed this. Is that the case you're working on?"
"Yeah, we've got a real problem on our hands."
"Don't we always." I tried to peak at the file.
Mason closed the manila folder. "I'd rather wait until everyone is here."
"Who else is coming besides Amalie?" My curiosity was definitely peaked now. I reached across his desk, hoping to grab the file.
"You look exhausted. Tell me about your dream while we wait."
I narrowed my eyes and glared at him. "I see this for the obvious distraction it is but you're right.” Sighing, I rubbed my temple.“However, I'm exhausted, too exhausted to argue. So I'll tell you. Prepare to be confounded."
He listened intently as I filled him in on the nightly visits from the weathered old woman who washed my clothes and hauntingly called my name. I expected him to laugh and tell me it was just a dream, that I had nothing to worry about.
I didn't expect him to look so stricken.
"Bean Nighe." He all but whispered the name.
"You've heard of her?"
"Of course I've heard of her. How long has she been coming to you?"
I stared at him curiously. "A few weeks. Why?"
"A few weeks and this is the first I'm hearing of it?” He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, obviously struggling to control his temper.“We talked about this. No holding things back, remember?"
"I thought it was just a dream.” I shrugged.“Honestly, I didn't think it was a big deal."
"It was a big enough deal for you to research it." Agitation rolled off him in waves.
When I agreed to give this thing with Mason a chance I also agreed to some conditions. No more flying solo, no more rash decisions or rushing off to play the hero. We were a team, in everything. This was just one of many set-backs.
"I got curious, did a little digging. Until tonight, everything I found pointed to deep seated family issues, particularly with a mother figure. I've told you about my childhood, does that dream analysis surprise you?"
His growl told me he wasn’t in the mood for reasonable—at least to me—explanations. "When did you discover the true meaning of the dream? How long have you known about the Bean Nighe?"
"Tonight. This morning. Before you called me." I held up a hand to stop the tongue lashing I knew he wanted to give me. "I would have told you. I got the impression on the phone there were more pressing matters than my insomnia."
"Is this why you won't let me stay at your place?” His gaze roamed over my face, searching.“Why you never stay at mine?"
"Is that the real reason why you're so upset?" I arched my brows. “Because we’re not having sleepovers?”
"I stayed at your lovely apartment the first night we met."
I turned to watch Aidan glide into the room, stopping behind my chair. Rolling my eyes, I snorted and muttered, “In the closet.”
Mason's jaw twitched but he didn't take the bait. "Aidan."
"It's almost sunrise. Shouldn't you be hunkered down for the day?" I sighed, wondering what he was doing here. I was too tired to deal with Aidan and Mason and their combined testoserone.
Putting the three of us in a room together was like throwing lit matches at sticks of dynamite - eventually one of them will explode.

About the Author:

LIZA SHAW Author Interview
Welcome all.
Today I’m very lucky to interview Rachel Rawlings author of Ill Fated, book five in The Maurin Kincaide Series.
Hi Rachel  thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Hmm, for someone as passionate about words as I am, I have an awful hard time finding the right ones when it comes to talking about me. I’m married to a wonderful guy who takes care of our three kids and cooks! I know, I know. I should have quit while I was ahead but I had a crazy dream to become a writer too! Surprisingly, they all support this insane endeavour. When I’m not writing I run my family’s business of two hair salons. We live in the Baltimore Metropolitan area and hope to retire in a small cottage, living off the grid in the mountains.

When did you decide to become a writer?
About six years ago. I have always loved writing though. When I was younger I did a lot of writing, none of it completed but there was a lot of it. I managed to hold on to some of my poetry. Definitely not my best work but I am really glad I still have it.
What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?
I had been reading a series and became disenchanted. I had a different vision for the characters and storyline. Of course I didn’t create the world so it wasn’t up to me. I decided if I wanted to change the outcome I needed to build my own world and characters.
Who do you feel supported you aside from family members?
The indie author community and blogs like this one have been huge supporters. I couldn’t do it without people like Roxanne and Bewitching Book Tours who find all of the wonderful blogs for my tours. My PA Gladys is amazing and I couldn’t accomplish very much without her, especially since I work a full time day job. Not to mention the network of talented authors I’ve met over the last few years. I’m lucky to call them my friends, friends who lift you up and happily share your work with others.
So, what have you written?
(*Include books, novellas, short stories, poems, blogs, awards or anything of interest.)
The Maurin Kincaide Series
The Morrigna
Witch Hunt
Wolfsbane
Blood Bath
Mistletoe Meltdown
Ill Fated

What are you working on at the minute?

I’m currently working on a new stand alone, set in a different world with different characters called Payable On Death. Jax our main character sold her soul to the devil and has been trying to earn her way back into heaven ever since. I’m also working on a short for an anthology to raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project.

Where do your ideas come from?

I have no idea lol! My husband says my head must be a scary place to live, lol. They come from random places, events in history that I’ve always found interesting, a song I heard on the radio, anything.
What genre are your books?
I write Urban Fantasy. I haven’t branched out into other genres yet. Although, the short I’m working on is more Sci-Fi Horror than Urban Fantasy.
What draws you to this genre?
I’ve been an avid reader of this genre for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been drawn to it. My preference in music and film leans that way as well.
Do you have a specific writing style?
Casual. I write how I speak. Sailor mouth and all. I’m pretty lucky my kids haven’t picked up on it, lol.
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
Oh this one always stumps me. Probably Milla Jovovich, she’s done a ton of work in films that have a feel similar to my series and still maintains an air of femininity. If not her, maybe Scarlett Johansen.
What is the hardest thing about writing?

Finding the time. I try to write something every day before I head off to work. I used to write in the evening when I got home from work but that created writer’s guilt, taking away precious family time. So I’ve rearranged my schedule and try my hardest to keep to it.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

Is there anything easy about it? I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a lot of hard work.

Do you have an interesting writing style or quirk?

I write primarily on a tablet and then upload everything to my laptop for final formatting.

Do you ever get writer’s Block? Do you have any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?
All the time. I am a punster, I know the beginning and the end but I’m along for the journey with my characters and often stumble along the way as events unfold differently than I thought they would.

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer? If so, what are they?
Read. Stephen King once said, “If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time to write.” Totally paraphrasing there, pretty sure that’s not the exact quote. Reading is our homework. It helps you learn different styles and hone your craft.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
So far I’ve been fortunate to have good feedback and established lasting friendships with readers.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Unbeknownst to her,, Kim Harrison. Her Hollows series is my favourite.
For your own reading, do you prefer e-books or traditional printed books?
I will always have a special place in my heart for printed books but I do love the convenience of taking as many books with me as I want lol.
What books have most influenced your life?
To Kill A Mocking Bird, Little Women, Wuthering Heights, Heroshima, The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath. All of these books moved me and made me think.

What book(s) are you reading at present? Laken Cane’s Shiv Crew series and UnHidden by Dina Given and Pearls bu L.M. Pruitt.
What do you think makes a good story? A solid world and interesting characters. I fall in love with the world as much as the people who live in it.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Read, work and spend a lot of time at home with my family.
Do you have a favourite motivational phrase?
Shut up and write.
Do you have a favourite positive saying/phrase?
“That it will never come again is what makes life so sweet.”- Emily Dickenson
Do you have a favourite book, and why would you say it is a favourite?
Little Women, I really related to Joe. I think I wanted to be her when I was a kid.
Do you have a favourite quote?
“Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company.”- Mark Twain
Do you have a favourite film, and why do you like it?

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?
Hopefully in my little cabin off the grid. Except for the internet. I’ll need that to continue to write, lol!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Go to college.
Which famous person/writer, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
Anne Rice. Hands down. She’s my favourite author of all time. Most people focus on her Vampire Chronicles but I’d love to talk with her about some of her stand alones, lie Servant of the Bones or The Violin.
If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Hells bells, this is a tough question!! I don’t think I could ever choose just one book.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Write something every day. One word, one sentence, one paragraph. Write, write write.
How can readers discover more about you and you work?

Excerpt:

A smile played over his lips, a knowing one. “You were mine, once.”

When his thumb brushed her cheekbone, dipping down to rub her bottom lip, it was all she could do not to purr. For whatever reasons, this man could get beneath her barriers. He could make her lose control.

But he made her remember the past, something that threatened the foundation of the life she’d built for herself.

The door swinging into darkness. Cold, oozing puddles that cling stickily to bare feet. A young voice, wavering as she called out for her parents. Her locket a dull gold, mottled with red where it lay.

With effort, Ana jerked her chin away from his touch. “Get your hands off me, Cade.” With a thin smile, she added, “Only the vampire has those rights.”

That flash of anger. For some reason, the man in front still viewed her as partly his—the jackal, maybe, claiming her. Except jackals were solitary animals.

A growl rumbled through his chest. Keeping eye contact, he stood. When he leaned forward, she flinched, unable to help herself. Whether she was afraid of being touched or tortured, she didn’t know.

His arms flexed with muscle as he worked at something about her head. Something clunked, and the chains fell away from her with a heavy jangle. They lay on the bedspread, innocent and coiled like a false snake.

Grasping she was free, Ana slid from the bed. “Son of a bitch,” she spat, putting out a hand to help steady her. “Iron?”

She lunged at him, confused when her body refused to cooperate. Her biker boots hit the floor as she landed, tottering, two feet away from her intended target.

Focusing inward, she registered how cold her embers were. They barely glittered, a few halfhearted sparks at her prompting. A breath hissed from her.

Phoenixes radiated at around one hundred and twenty degrees; she’d wager she was operating on about human temperature. The lack of heat in the room and lack of food and water equaled her core running on empty. Even as she thought it, the sparks began to disintegrate, sucking inward to preserve the embers at her core.

Determined, she fought through the weakness, charging Cade.

He allowed himself to be thrust backward. “You’re too cold,” he commented. “Hungry. You can’t hurt me.”

“You wanna bet?”

Her knee jerked upward, narrowly blocked by Cade’s hand.

“Don’t even try it.” He pushed her away, making her stagger from weak knees. “You’ll be on your back quicker than an eager whore. Then again,” he continued, the jackal’s obvious pleasure at the verbal sparring spinning through his wicked smile, “maybe you’d enjoy that.”

With a vengeful shriek, Ana went for him. She jabbed with her fists, using her elbows when that didn’t work. He avoided all her blows, laughing with a gut-deep amusement.

When she used her scissor-kick, she saw her mistake too late as he caught her legs and flipped her to the dirty gray carpet. He was on top of her before she could curse, lazy amusement swirling like phoenix smoke.

His arms caged her as an old dimple flashed. “What did I say?”

His weight suddenly pressed down on her abdomen slashes. A wince tugged at her face before she could stop it, a hiss pouring from between her teeth.

His face changed immediately. “Fires above, Alana, you should have said something.”

“I thought you’d hurt me if it was necessary.” She shoved him off her. He let her, a hunter tracking her as she stumbled away. She dropped into the chair he’d claimed earlier, unwilling to admit her jelly limbs. “You’re all mouth.”

A slow smile spread over his face while his eyes altered to a dark velvet. Damn. She’d always been a sucker for the shadow-drenched eyes.

He stalked nearer, the jackal’s satisfied rumble curling out of his mouth as strong hands came down over hers on the chair’s arms.

She couldn’t dislodge him. Curses spilled from her as panic, not for her life but for something more prized, surged up her throat. “Don’t you come near me, Cade Lorin.”

“All mouth?” he repeated, his voice that dark drawl he’d once whispered her name with. “I’ll show you all mouth.”

Deacon is just as unsettled by Ruth—and, having spent more than two hundred years ushering souls to Purgatory, Deacon is seldom shocked by anything. As he helps Ruth to understand her true nature, she awakens desires that he decided long ago a Reaper can’t afford.

A demon invasion forces Deacon to confront the darkness in his own past even as he fights to save the human souls he’s charged to protect. When he’s taken captive, his first concern is for Ruth. But Ruth just might be able to save herself—and the Reaper she can’t live without—if she can learn to wield her newfound powers.

By day he saves lives in the city he loves. Can he save souls too?

Nate is an EMT, a witch and a newly inducted member of the Reaper Authority Force. What he's not is a reaper. With unexplained abilities, his true nature lies somewhere in between the angels, demons and reapers he finds himself involved with. When he's paired with the reaper Maeve, he struggles to find his place in the rising war to save the souls of Meridian and the world.

Maeve has tried to hide her reaper handicap--her toxic reaper energy--from her colleagues. But when she's possessed by a fallen angel and forced to poach souls for Hell, her greatest weakness might be the only thing that saves her.

Nate uses his growing powers and his innate magic to find Maeve. He'll do whatever it takes to save her, revealing more than he ever imagined in the process.

About the Author:

Lisa has always enjoyed reading about monsters in love and now she writes about them, because monsters need love too.

She adores beasties of all sorts, fictional as well as real, and has a farm full of them in her Southwest Missouri home, including: one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees, and a guinea pig.

She may or may not keep a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in her trunk at all times, including a machete. Just. In. Case.
