What is your name? Do you use a pen name
(if so, why?)? April Angel/Milly Taiden.
Both are pen names. The first one is my
birthday month and my mom’s name. The second is a combo of my nickname, middle name and son’s name. I
Always liked pen names as a cool way to create a hidden identity. I’m Batman!
Or in this case, I’m the batwoman of erotic romance ;) lol
Tell me a bit about yourself: I love to
write. I love to read and I love chocolate. I love to travel, even though I
don’t get as much time to do it lately. I love trying new places to eat and
just hanging with my son and niece and nephew. We’re a very tight family so
they enjoy it too.
What type of genre do you write? Paranormal
and Contemporary Erotic Romance
What genre to you personally read? Both of
the ones I write. I also love horror and suspense.
Tell me about your latest? Stranded
Temptation is the story of Kara. A high level accountant who loves her job,
hates her boss and hates that she wants him. Max is just a little bit of a
work-a-holic who can’t figure out how to keep Kara by his side and keep not let
his lust for her destroy their working relationship.
They have a plane crash and things take a
wide turn when Kara throws caution to the wind and decides the crash is her
wake up call to do whatever she wants with Max.
What sparked your passion for books and the
art of a good story?
I have loved reading since I was a kid, so
I’ve always enjoyed getting lost in the magic of a good story. Romances make me
smile and sigh and make life that much brighter.
Is there a particular book that changed or
affected your life in a big way?
There is but it hasn’t been published. It
was the first one I let my sister read and that’s when she realized I loved writing.
She became my biggest fan from that moment on and hasn’t stopped.
Is there a message in your book that you
want readers to grasp?
I think that no matter how the story starts
or what my characters go through, I need romance and a happily ever after. It’s
what makes me smile at the end of each book.
What challenges have you faced in your
writing career?
Lack of time, a full time job, a child who
wants attention (aka the husband) and a son who also wants attention. A busy
social life with my family and a very busy writing calendar. I get very little
sleep some days.
What has been your best moment as a writer?
Probably when I was told my book was
awesome by random people on facebook. I was all like huh? It was weird and fun.
Somebody other than my family is reading my stuff! It boggled my mind LOL.
Who is your author idol?
Probably my best friend Mina Carter. She’s
an amazing cover artist, a full time writer and wife and mother. And with the
insanity that is her life, she still makes time for me every single day! I love
that woman.
Do you see yourself in any of your
characters?
Probably in a lot of the females. They tend
to be silly and smart-mouthed. Probably not as sarcastic or bitchy as me but
still fun to read.
Do you feel like your dream has come true
or is there much more to do?
Oh there is much work to be done. But in a
way it has come true. I love seeing others reading my work and telling me they
liked it.
What does your workspace look like?
Small. I live in NYC so our apt. is a whole
in the wall. I have a tiny desk in one corner of the living room with my laptop
and two notebooks with notes and other stuff. That’s about it.
Have you ever had a day when you just
wanted to quit?
Yes. I’ve had these often. Usually when I
had to do edits to older books. But then I remember I love to write. It is what
makes me smile when things in life are hard. Writing is my escape and giving it
up would be like cutting off a limb. I could survive without it, but I’d miss
it every day.
What do you do when you’re not writing? I
try to read. But in reality I am usually hanging with my family. We go out to
the mall, watch movies and enjoy being together.
What are the most important attributes to
remaining sane as a writer?
Don’t focus on ranking so much as promoting
your work and writing. Don’t spam places either, but remember that everyone
else is trying to get their work noticed too. Share other’s work and they will
share yours. Marketing is an art and letting yourself get caught up in sales
and not focus on creating a backlist will only delay the future releases. Focus
on writing. Create a back list and don’t go crazy with rankings.
Did you have a moment when you realized you
were meant to be a writer?
I’ve always loved writing. I guess the
moment I realized it was when my friend told me to send her my stuff, she read
it, pointed out things that needed fixing and told me ‘submit this, it’s good’.
It was like wow. Maybe I should. I did and here we are J
What advice would you give to aspiring
authors?
Keep at it. Read about common mistakes and
figure out a great way to make your story shine. Don’t overuse unnecessary
words like and or as. Have good critique partners look at your stories (not
friends and family) real authors looking at things the same way as you. But
more than anything, don’t give up. It may take years, but don’t let your hope
die for a story you love.
After this book, what is next? I have
Wicked Valentine coming out as April on 1/25. I have Party Crasher coming out
on 2/22. As Milly Taiden Wynter’s Captive (wolf shifters) will be out on 1/18
