Irina Argo is a combined pen name for two authors, Irina Kardos and Jo-An Torres.

Irina’s world is dark. She works as a clinical psychologist in a Juvenile Correctional Facility dealing with the extremes of human behavior on a regular basis and takes care of her paralyzed husband who suffered a stroke several years ago. To bring light into her life she writes. Writing has always been her passion. She is originally from Russia where she was employed as a TV journalist.

Jo-An is a Leo, a lioness who has emerged to follow her dream, to someday write a book of her own. She owned a costume shop for 15 years and was able to satisfy and excel in her creative nature. She is an over-achiever and believes that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and ignore the nay-sayers.  Her philosophy is based on Shakespeare "It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves." She currently resides in California with her 5 cats and 1 husband.

Excerpt 1 (Simone at the Hunter’s auction)

                 

As the auctioneer spoke, two Sekhmi in eveningwear—a male carrying an elegant dagger and a female a silver tray covered with glass vials—approached the Amiti girl.

“She’s barely eighteen, ladies and gentlemen. That’s a good three years younger than the youngest bloodstock you’ll usually come across. Look at her; she’s stunning, simply stunning, and as you can see, we’ve kept her well conditioned, in excellent health.”

The auctioneer paused as the male Hunter grasped the Amiti’s hand and held it above the tray. The girl showed no resistance, her only display of anxiety the butterfly fluttering of her thick eyelashes. He raised his other hand, and the dagger flashed in the light as with a swift motion he slit the Amiti’s palm. The dark, intoxicating scent of fresh blood filled the room as it poured into the vials.

Simone’s gums began to itch and burn, and she covered her mouth with her hand so no one would see her fangs punching down. It was considered terribly rude to expose one’s fangs in public, even among other vampires. But she needn’t have worried; everyone’s attention was riveted to the stage and the blood flowing from the girl’s wound. The room vibrated with bloodlust and sexual arousal.

The female Sekhmi approached Simone’s table, offering the Royal Pride the first of the blood samples. Knowing that all eyes were on her, Simone forced herself not to hesitate and took a small sip—and was immediately flooded with euphoria.

“For this magnificent specimen, we open the bidding at ten million U.S. dollars,” announced the auctioneer.

Turning in his arms to face him, I took in his softly sleeping face. His mouth was slightly open



and his long dark lashes relaxed against his high cheekbones. Running a finger down the side



of his face earned me a deep husky moan. It was the sexiest thing I’d ever heard. His facial hair



felt like warm velvet against my cheek as I leaned in and pressed a tiny kiss on the corner of his



I backed away, expecting to continue to watch him sleep, but he followed me up with his eyes



still closed and started to kiss me. Again he moaned when I allowed him access and he slipped



his tongue into my mouth. Flipping me onto my back, his naked body covered mine. The white



sheet tangled around our bodies as he pressed himself to mine.



His hand worked its way up my side brushing against my breast and I released a tiny sound into



his mouth. His hand continued its journey until he rested it against the side of my neck. Tattooed



fingers dug into the hairs on the back of my neck as he invaded my mouth with Zeke sweetness.



Pulling away, he gazed down at me with sleepy eyes and a lazy grin.



“You woke us up.” His voice was rough with sleep.



I wrapped my arms around his neck, “Us?”



Looking down between our bodies, he looked back up at me with a smile as he pressed his hips



into mine. Hard heat that pushed into my thigh and I lifted my hips for more. He smiled down at



me and shifted the hair out of his eyes.

Tabatha's been writing since she could pick up a pencil. Her first publication was a little poem in



her elementary school paper, from that point on she was hooked. When she was a teenager, she



traded in her girly magazines for personalized writing notebooks.



At nineteen, she met her own personal prince charming and writing took a back burner for a



while. She's now married to that prince and the mother of a beautiful seven-year-old princess/



rock star. Once her daughter was born, writing came back into her life, and she finished her very



first novel, Wicked Fate, in May of 2009.



She's now pursuing her English degree and she hopes to one day teach while continuing to write.

What sparked your passion for books and the art of a good story?



   It all began with my father’s early gift of a little orange book I still have called 100 Best Poems



for boys and Girls. I was thrilled with verses by Robert Louis Stevenson, Emily Dickinson, Amy



Lowell and others. After that it was the page turner Nancy Drew books, and I wrote my own



about a brother’s kidnapping--although my mother threw it out.  I read constantly after that, in



daytime and with a flashlight in bed. And in high school moved on to Huckleberry Finn and Jane



Is there a particular book that changed or affected your life in a big way?



   I guess it was Austen’s Northanger Abbey, with the exuberant character Catherine who loves



Gothic novels and has a vivid imagination. Even imagining that a friend’s father has committed a



murder!  I think it was that character who got me writing mysteries.



What has been your best moment as a writer?



   Probably when I won an Agatha award at a Malice Domestic conference and I was so surprised



and tongue-tied I could only say, uh, “thank you,” when I staggered up to the podium. After that



cameras flashed in my face and to get away from the unaccustomed adulation, I only wanted to



get to the bar and have a whiskey on-the-rocks. And did!



   I greatly admire Kate Atkinson, who wrote, among other wonderful books, Case Histories,



and Started Early, Took my Dog. Her protagonist is the delightful, reluctant detective Jackson



Brodie. The writing is brilliant,  iconoclastic, and filled with black humor as one might call it.



I’ve read everything she’s written, whether mystery or wholly literary. Can’t get enough of her!



What do you do when you’re not writing?



   I garden, take walks, exercise, lunch with friends, sing in a chorus, take in lectures and plays at



nearby Middlebury College, travel, and read, read, read.



What are the most important attributes to remaining sane as a writer?



   Probably taking long walks or trips, leaving my ears and eyes open to everything that goes on



around me. I invariably come home with new ideas, plots, and characters.



Did you have a moment when you realized you were meant to be a writer?



   In truth, I can’t think of a “moment.” I do know that it came on me early. Asked to write an



autobiography in elementary school, I wrote “I’m going to be an actress and a writer.”  I ended



up doing both, although professionally only as a writer. The acting/directing has been mostly



community based—though I love it. And I use theater techniques in my writing.



What genre do you personally read?



   Half mystery and half literary novels and stories. Also plays, and poems before I turn out the



   The latest is described below: Broken Strings, a contemporary mystery novel set in rural



Vermont, in which I’ve a puppeteer sleuth.  My sister was a puppeteer, and so was my motherin-law. My spouse and I are using her beautiful handmade marionettes to help launch the novel



with a one act show I’ve written. My son directs a Very Merry Theatre here in Vermont, and



we’ll teach seven of his teenagers to operate the puppets—and hope no one tangles the strings, or

A far second to oranges, the song I sang in the shower every night had a way of soothing me. More than anything, it made me tired enough to fall asleep. With Whitney gone, I didn’t have to whisper it.

The stars are out,

It’s time for bed.

Now close your eyes,

And rest your head.

May angels shield you with their wings,

As you dream your little angel dreams.

I didn’t recall composing that song, but apparently, I used to think I was good and perfect like the angels. I knew better now.

I stepped out of the shower and tugged a brush through my unruly brown tangles. I stared into the mirror over the sink as I started the song again. My skin screamed winter. I should be a warmer tan; I looked less creepy in the summer. Maybe that was why the girls had been digging into me so hard. I looked rather witchy. The unease that made them mock me was probably their souls warning them, urging them to notice I was different and dangerous.

At my worst, it feels like the fire that could easily shoot from my palm is raging inside of me. My heart picks up, more than when I’m scared. It pounds, I can’t hear. My blood dances, taunting me, begging me to hurt whoever’s hurt me. And I know that I can. I feel that I can.

But I don’t. I breathe and pray and let the magic cool.

Writing tips:

I’ve read my share of writing how-to books, and I have learned some helpful things. I use the two most helpful tips in my daily writing and wanted to share with all of you.

First, start with an outline. Plan our opening, your point of no return complication, at least two roadblocks, the climax, the gasp moment, and the redemption. I’ve written a few stories where I didn’t have these planned out. Maybe I started with an opening and just kept writing. I’m not that kind of writer. If I start rambling in chapter one, I will still be rambling in chapter twenty-five.

Also, the outline makes manuscript evaluation easier. You can ask yourself, “Where did the story go to hell?” Was it good until the roadblocks? Then change them? Did it never take off? Then it was the opening. Be flexible and open to change, but starting with a plan has proved to work better for me than starting without one.

Second, use your resources. Read books in your genre.

I have learned how to use certain words, punctuations, sentence structures, dialog tags, and more by reading. In some of my early stories, I didn’t know how to write dialog tags. And I’ve gotten a few freebies on Amazon with authors who either don’t know how or have chosen to be creative with it. From reading, I noticed the pattern: “blah blah blah,” this person said. With more reading, I started to see how strange words in dialog tags distract from the scene such as “blah blah blah,” this person extrapolated.

Reading can also help with voice and rhythm. Read something you admire, or secretly wish you wrote, and study it. Are they using commas strategically to get you to, pause where they want you to? Did they take out the punctuation in the sentence to make it feel like a rant and like the person is really upset and their thoughts are running a mile a minute and they might just … scream.

I learned these things from reading and I still learn new things every day. In writing your novel, don’t forget to read, for pleasure and for research. It has helped me to move from my rough outline to a finished product.

Harmony Kent (b. 2013-United Kingdom)- the author in her that is, the woman herself is ... err ... just a smidge older than that! Brisingamen is her first ever book, and she had great fun writing this story, and another book (The Glade) is already in progress - in fact it is going so well that Harmony has blisters on the ends of her fingers. Like Brisingamen, The Glade will be a stand alone book - not part of a series unless her readers ask for more on either of them. Harmony is a single young middle aged writer, with no children - but has plenty of cute gremlins who claim to be her nieces and nephews. She sincerely hopes you enjoy reading her books.

What is your name? Do you use a pen name (if so, why?)?

My name is Harmony Kent.  I do use a pen name, as this allows me the freedom to write whatever I want to, without worrying about what my family, old colleagues, etc might think!  (I used to be a Nun, and my writing definitely doesn’t fit into that Genre!)

Tell me a bit about yourself:

I am 40 years old (okay, if I’m being really honest, I am 40.96)!  I am single with no children, but have plenty of cute gremlins around me who claim that they are my nieces and nephews.  When they get too much for me I throw them on the rebounder for an hour (kidding).  Six years ago I suffered a major injury during routine surgery which led to a below knee amputation three years ago.  This is mostly why I am no longer a Nun and have the luxury of being able to spend as much time as I want to writing, reading, making cards, learning the piano – oh and occasionally remembering to sleep.

What type of genre do you write?

My first book, Brisingamen, is in the Genre of Fantasy Fiction.  Whereas my current book in progress, The Glade, is more in the area of supernatural thriller (I think)!  I am playing with the idea of trying my hand at YA next, as this is a Genre I particularly love to read.

What genre to you personally read?

I read fantasy, fiction, action/adventure, crime thriller, young adult, paranormal – I enjoy a broad range of books and am always ready to try something new.  I don’t go for outright erotica, that is just not for me.

Tell me about your latest?

My latest book is called Brisingamen, and is in the genre of Fantasy Fiction.  The idea for the book came  after having read news reports online about the finding of Britain’s “Atlantis”, which really sparked my imagination.  Here is the blurb about the book:

Beneath the north sea a land of magic lies undetected. The lives of many are drawn inexorably closer together in a race against time, as both energy companies and evil beings attempt to destroy the magic which is protecting not just this land but all worlds. The unwitting protagonists have no idea of how suddenly and irrevocably their lives are about to change. Are they up to the challenges they now face?

Excerpt: Matthias watched, appalled yet relieved, as Irina slaughtered the advancing palefaces. She seemed to transform before his very eyes into some kind of white demon, still exquisitely stunning – even in her terrible fury. He remained frozen where he was as she turned her attention toward the dwarves, and Aart and Else. A shudder ran through him as he saw wolves bounding into the fracas. He crouched over Gemma as best he could, she was unconscious again, he worried at how badly she may have hit her head when she fell...He [knew] he had failed, he had not managed to protect any of them

What sparked your passion for books and the art of a good story?

Since being a small girl (really for as long as I can remember) I have had a love of reading and making up stories.  In school it came as no surprise to anyone when I excelled in English studies …. We’ll stay quiet about the maths marks though! 

Is there a particular book that changed or affected your life in a big way?

A heart as Wide as the World by Sharon Salsberg – a book on Buddhism that really changed my life hugely … after reading this I went on to spend 13 years in a Buddhist temple, ten of those as an ordained nun!  So I guess we could say this little book had a big impact!  This book really spoke to me.  More recently, and in the realm of fiction, I would have to say that the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer and also the Harry Potter books by J K Rowling have all caught my rather vivid imagination.

Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?

Not to be controlled by our random thoughts, and that we can be in charge of our own lives.  Things happen that are outside our control,  but only we can change how they affect us.  We have the choice. 

What challenges have you faced in your writing career?

By far the hardest part is getting the book discovered, finding readers.  The writing is easy and something I enjoy immensely, but the marketing … yikes!  I am also having to get to grips with running a blog and being active in various forums – as you can imagine, having spent 13 years out of circulation, this is somewhat of a challenge for me.

What has been your best moment as a writer?

Seeing the book in print and holding it in my hands … ooh, my first book! 

Who is your author idol?

I don’t know that I have one.  There are so many author’s that I respect and revere it would be unfair to try and single out any one of them alone.  Sometimes it can be one line out of a whole book that just does it for me, you know?

Do you see yourself in any of your characters?

Well, I would have to say that some of Aart’s experiences after his accident are from my own personal experience and absorbed into his world.  Dirck’s self-searching and inner learning are also quite close to some of the things I have discovered for myself over the years. 

Do you feel like your dream has come true or is there much more to do?

My dream of writing a book and publishing has been realised – my next ambition is to have it read!  As I enjoy writing so much, this is what I will continue to do.  Even if only one person ever reads my work, if it enriches their life somehow then I have done my work and am happy.

What does your workspace look like?

Most of the time it is boringly neat, although there are times when there are bits of paper with notes written on it strewn all over the place!  My computer faces the window onto the back garden, and I frequently stop and gaze at the view.

Have you ever had a day when you just wanted to quit?

Never – not with my writing, it is just too much fun for me. 

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I read!  I also make cards, listen to music, and am learning to play the piano.  These days I am also to be found writing on my blog.

What are the most important attributes to remaining sane as a writer?

Have fun!  Take a break once in a while and RELAX.

Did you have a moment when you realized you were meant to be a writer?

My first English essay at school – much to my teacher’s dismay!  (She got more pages than she bargained for)…

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Write for yourself – don’t try and imagine what a prospective reader, your family, your boss, etc might think about this that or the other – you will just strangle your writing if you do this.  Don’t try and force it if the ideas dry up for a time, just relax and sit down to write when the story starts flowing again.  This will help you to achieve a vibrant dynamism in your book and it will flow beautifully for the reader.

After this book, what is next?

More books!  I am currently writing my second book, The Glade, which is based very loosely on the Forest of Dean – which I believe J K Rowling based her Dark Forest on.  It is one of the few true, large forests left in the UK and Europe …. A tranquil forest clearing that seems like a dream come true for the Wenstrops, but all too soon strange things start happening.  Helen is arrested for the murder of her husband, but did she do it?  What is really going on?  What is more, her husband’s body goes inexplicably missing whilst she is being held in custody.  Keep an eye on my blog for upcoming sneek peeks and giveaways.

He’s here, just inside the electric-blue doors that mark the entrance to hell. I can sense him. The



part of me that lives inside him calls to me. The connection is so strong that it takes my breath



away. For a brief moment I begin to hyperventilate. Even if it wasn’t a matter of life or death, I’d



still want to be here more than any other place on earth. Here, in a back alley of the city of sin.



I’m pulled towards him, so I waste no more time and push the doors open. The stench of lust and



cigarette smoke invades my senses. The distinct smell of pheromones and overly sweet perfume



mixes in for a very nauseating scent.



He’s knows I’m here. He can sense me the way I sense him and even though I can’t see him, I



The loud techno music is distracting as I make my way through the crowded room. Half naked



women rub themselves like horny cats against silver poles. One in particular catches my



attention. She bends with the music allowing her platinum hair to fall over before she shakes



it back and forth. She runs her hands up her knee high boots before throwing her head back—



platinum locks thrashing around her narrow face. She looks down at me from her mini stage and



mirror eyes flash with her overly seductive smile.



I turn away quickly and my eyes land on him. The moment I see him, the side of his mouth



twitches into an evil smirk. Adam would never smile at me that way, and yet, there he is.

Tabatha's been writing since she could pick up a pencil. Her first publication was a little poem in



her elementary school paper, from that point on she was hooked. When she was a teenager, she



traded in her girly magazines for personalized writing notebooks.



At nineteen, she met her own personal prince charming and writing took a back burner for a



while. She's now married to that prince and the mother of a beautiful seven-year-old princess/



rock star. Once her daughter was born, writing came back into her life, and she finished her very



first novel, Wicked Fate, in May of 2009.



She's now pursuing her English degree and she hopes to one day teach while continuing to write.
