Hello! :D
I'm PJ. I'm a happily married mother of three incredible children. But my super power lies in words... LOL No, seriously though... I write and read romance, of all sorts. Romance is a girl's best friend. Well, it is for this girl. Ha! For the longest time, I read books by Stephen King, Tess Gerritsen and the like. Then a friend introduced me to Bella Andre and Jamie McGuire. From that moment on, I was addicted. I've read so many romance books now that I couldn't honestly tell you my favorite read or author. There are just so many out there and so many that aren't getting the reading love they should. Or at least I think anyway. *wink*
I started blogging before I began writing. It wasn't until my husband dropped my notebooks in my lap and told me to do something with my OWN stories that my writing career began. From that moment forward, I have written 21 books. 19 books under PJ, 1 book under Réna Edward, and 1 book under Maree Alexander.
Life is ever changing and we have move with the punches or get knocked out. Because of these changes, my writing career has changed as well. This site is a stem of that.

Now for my blog post. My second last book was Vampire of Brazil (in both English and Portuguese). In high school I was an exchange student in Brazil for six months. I stayed with a family that I still call my family to this day. Well, my 'cousin' found me on Facebook and asked me to write a book for her and she didn't speak English. So, I took a picture of her and started weaving my story. Many of the things in the book are actually true. The cemeteries, her favorite colors, set in the city of Rio de Janiero where she lives and then there's some Egyptian Mythology included just to spice it up.

So, what was the inspiration for this story?

As the cover states, Deadwater Manor was inspired by true events, so I wanted to share what this means.

About eight years ago, I wanted to see if I could write dark. I had already written a historical time travel, which was more on the adventurous side (this will be released later this year). At first I thought I'd write a ghost story, and I remembered that my dad worked at psychiatric hospitals during short spurts of his life, both state and private. He rarely talked about his time there. My mom had said it was because he was upset over things he saw.

So, I finally asked him. There were no ghosts, but he mentioned how he felt bad for the young girls because sometimes they were admitted against their will by families who didn’t understand depression or other milder psychiatric conditions. He also shared patient routines and how the hospital rooms were set up. And as he continued, he remembered a discovery he made in the attic. It gives me chills just thinking about it, even now, and it became the central part of the story.

So, though the story and hospital are completely fictional, it is based on a girl admitted against her will, my dad’s discovery and some of the patient routines, outbursts, clothing and treatments he mentioned. The rest is based on research.

Sadly, my dad has since passed away from Alzheimers. He was a wonderful man, unlike the father in the story (which he always reminded me to make clear!). Before he became too confused, I let him know I dedicated the book to him. I knew he understood when he became weepy. I'll be thinking of him on March 31.

About the Author:

Sandie Will was born in Poughkeepsie, New York and moved to Florida during the 1970s. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Geology degree from the University of South Florida and Master of Science in Environment al Engineering Sciences degree from the University of Florida. She is currently working as a hydrogeologist and manager at a state agency that protects water supplies and natural systems. She primarily manages well construction and aquifer testing operations.  During her career, she has written numerous technical reports and articles for various science-related publications. Now, she is adding fiction to her writing repertoire with her debut novel, The Caging at Deadwater Manor. Sandie currently lives in Florida with her husband, Charlie. What type of genre do you write?

I love to write YA thrillers, historical time travel and paranormal. After my first debut, I will be releasing the first book of my time travel series later this year.

What genre to you personally read?

Pretty much anything, but I tend to want to read dark, creepy books, science fiction and historical novels. I especially love novels that stay with you for a while or make you question reality.

Tell me about your latest?

The Caging at Deadwater Manor is based on a discovery my dad made while working at a psychiatric hospital. It gives me the creeps just thinking about it! He also shared patient routines and hospital routines that helped me provide a more realistic storyline. So, the story is fiction, but it’s inspired by my dad’s discovery and I’ve incorporated some actual happenings here and there.

Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?

There is. This book is for mature young adults because there are some situations where the main character, Jeannie Kynde, struggles to choose the right path for herself, especially since she is drugged and her survival instinct is kicking in. I think young adults have (unfortunately) had to make difficult choices at times, and I hope this story helps them see that they should stick to their own ethical values. Also, sometimes you need to forgive yourself, which can be so hard.

What does your workspace look like?

I have an old writer’s desk I found in an antique shop a few years back. It’s in front of a set of windows on the second story of my home surrounded by old oaks and visiting birds. It’s a peaceful place – my sanctuary!

After this book, what is next?

The first book of The Time Lands Series called The Hunger will be released later this year. This book is about a girl from today who meets a guy from Ireland who is going through desperate times. There’s a bit of first love, adventure, suspense and comedy all wrapped in a sweet story. Remember the names: Carly Matthews and Liam Healy – they’ll be sharing their adventures in time for a while!

Currently, I’m writing on another psychological thriller and researching historical information for a paranormal.

What is your name? Do you use a pen name (if so, why?)?

Barbara Winkes. That’s my real name.

Tell me a bit about yourself:

I’m a trained psychologist. I was born and raised in Germany, and now live in Canada with my wife. The time it took to become a permanent resident gave me the opportunity to work on my stories and submit them, and by the time I was granted permanent resident status, I also signed a contract with a small press.

What type of genre do you write?

I mostly write suspense and romance, and I recently published my first paranormal book called RISE. My leads are usually women, often, but not always, lesbians.

What genre to you personally read?

I love to read thrillers, and romance with a good amount of drama, but I’m willing to try pretty much anything if the characters appeal to me.

Tell me about your latest?

RISE is about five paranormal females—a vampire, a witch, a shifter, a fairy and an angel—who have lived alongside of humans for a long time. They are aware that not all is great with humanity, but they still think humans can get it right by themselves—until they witness a young woman getting attacked, one of too many stories. They decide it’s enough. All of them agree that change is necessary, but of course fairies and vampires have a slightly different approach. Not all humans are interested in ending patriarchy, so they have their work cut out for them.

Aside from the serious subjects addressed in this book (violence against women in the world), there are also lighter moments. It’s the superhero story I would love to see on the big screen someday.

What sparked your passion for books and the art of a good story?

My parents used to read to me a lot when I was little. I couldn’t wait to be able to read, and  for as long as I can remember, I’ve had stories in my head. Trips to libraries or bookstores were always exciting to me—and still are. There’s something magical about the world between the covers. I discovered some of my favorite authors and studied them, what about their writing made me feel the way I did, and I was eager to find my own voice.

Is there a particular book that changed or affected your life in a big way?

Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the scariest books I’ve ever read. I think it’s important for us to go back and understand the lives of women in the generations before us, or frankly, right now in other parts of the world, to make sure we don’t ever go back. In terms of thriller writing, I found Tess Gerritsen’s The Apprentice unforgettable in the way tension built.

Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?

Yes, absolutely. I love writing about women, but I also want to create a world where they support each other and are able to put their differences aside for the common goal. I’m always sad and a little frustrated when I see women unfriend each other on social media for minor differences of opinion, when they are really on the same side when it comes to the big picture—divide and conquer.

What challenges have you faced in your writing career?

To keep going simply out of the love for the characters and stories. In the end, writing is a business too, and it doesn’t happen overnight.

What has been your best moment as a writer?

There have been some great moments—when a reader relates to a character, or finds the perfect escape in a story. Or when you put down a line that you know pack an emotional punch. It’s pretty great most of the time. J

Who is your author idol?

Aforementioned authors. I also admire authors like Val McDermid and Sarah Waters who have found a home in the mainstream. I hope that many more lesbian authors will be able to do the same.

Do you see yourself in any of your characters?

Not necessarily in the job they do—I’m not a vampire either…but there are certainly aspects that we have in common in the way we relate to the world. I believe that we do well when we support one another rather than see ourselves in a constant competition. Whether or not the women in my books are romantically involved with another woman, they value their friendships.

Do you feel like your dream has come true or is there much more to do?

Both. When I received the email that my book was accepted for publication for the first time, I couldn’t believe it. I thought it had to be some sort of scam! Then, holding the first paperback in my hand was amazing. I am beyond grateful for the support of readers and fellow authors like you. There’s always more work to do, we we’re lucky that it’s the best job anyone can have, right?

What does your workspace look like?

I have an office/library where I do most of the work. In the summer, I like to sit out on the deck with the laptop. My desk is moderately messy for most of the week.

Have you ever had a day when you just wanted to quit?

Sure. I consider doing this job an absolute privilege, but I think we all have those moments when the numbers aren’t what they could be, or when the writing doesn’t come out the way you feel it could be—or, when it doesn’t come out at all. However, I know, it always comes back.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Read (I think that’s not a big revelation), take long walks with my wife. We are both political junkies, we like exploring the city and new restaurants, and travel.

What are the most important attributes to remaining sane as a writer?

Being able to distance yourself from what makes it a job and a business sometimes, and reminding yourself why you are doing this in the first place.

Did you have a moment when you realized you were meant to be a writer?

It’s just something I’ve always been doing, regardless of the circumstances. These days, there are a lot more opportunities for indie publishers and authors that didn’t exist when I was younger. Mainstream publishers and agents are still hesitant when it comes to stories outside of a certain mold (for example, romance with older women, or LGBT characters). We are able to tell and publish those stories anyway, rather than having to wait for change.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Find a routine that suits your life and your goals. Sit down to write every day, get feedback from people you trust, and study the marketing side. Ultimately, tell the story you want to tell.

After this book, what is next?

This November, I’ll publish Intrusions, #4 in the Carpenter/Harding thriller series, about two women cops who started their relationship under complicated circumstances. I am currently working on #6.

Finally after much debate in his own mind, he got up and made his way to the bar.

The seat next to her was vacant so he took it and motioned to the bartender, letting him know that he needed a drink. He then glanced at the girl next to him, only to meet her gaze; she was looking right at him. She smiled; then quickly looked back at her drink.

He smirked, but she didn’t see it. She was even more beautiful up close. There was definitely no turning back now, he licked his lips and began to say something to her, but before he could get it out the bartender came over and said,

“What can I get you?” in a cheery tone.

“A gin and tonic, please.” Camden ordered.

“Sure thing.” The bartender agreed, heading off to make his drink.

“Hi.” Camden whispered in the girl’s direction.

She glanced up quickly to see if he was talking to her, when she seen that he was indeed talking to her.

“Hi.” She muttered back quietly; then she quickly scanned the bar behind her.

Camden thought she looked nervous, maybe even scared. He wondered what that was all about, when she was finally convinced that the area around her was safe, she looked back at Camden.

“Having a good time at the party?” He questioned, even though she clearly was not.

“Yeah, I really like the band and this new album is really good too.” She nearly whispered, looking at her clutch.

So not only was she absolutely gorgeous, but she liked his music and she like it for the actual music, not him. This just got better and better.

When he didn’t answer her she asked,

“What do think of this band?”

Chasity Tarantino currently resides in Highland, Indiana.  Reading has always been a huge passion of hers. There is nothing better than being able to escape reality for a little while and delve into a new world created just for entertainment to her. Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she's done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There's only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.

Her solution: she needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.

Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around-hottie, and Sally's best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He'd do anything for Sal--even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she's "more than pretty," and expertly kissing her at parties.

The problem: Sally's been in love with Becks all her life--and he's completely clueless.

 Meeting his gaze, I forced out the words, "Ready to make it official?"

     Becks grinned, and the sight of that familiar expression, the look in those eyes I'd loved forever, was enough to strengthen my resolve.

     Reaching up, I gave myself no time to reconsider.

     My lips were on his the next instant, meeting, feeling, rejoicing in this moment I'd never thought but always hoped would happen.  I knew Becks was surprised, could feel it in the stiffness in his shoulders, the tight set to his mouth.  But it didn't matter.  I was kissing Becks, my best friend, my Han Solo, my one.  This was the best moment of my life.  I was certain it couldn't get any better.

     But then Becks started kissing me back.

     His arms wrapped around my waist, his lips guiding mine, as he went from passive passenger along for the ride to full-on conductor.  I gasped as he bent me back over his arm, and felt him grin through the kiss.  My toes just skimming the floor, supported almost entirely by Becks's strength, I was happy to let him lead.  Becks wasn't just a great kisser.  He was a master.  Far as first kisses go, it was a showstopper.
